Why go Re-Useable?
“Plastic or paper?”
That familiar two-word litany at the local grocery store has begun to grate on the ears and minds of the eco-friendly whose ranks continue to swell during these green-theme times. That’s why “cloth” has begun to loom large as the tote of choice.
Cloth tote bags in one form or another have been around for decades carrying everything from grandma’s knitting to grandbaby’s diapers, but today’s push is for their use during all types of shopping particularly in grocery store excursions and there are a number of reasons why.
Topping the list of why-go-cloth is, of course, the environment. You would have to have your head in one to be unaware of the dangers plastic bags present to the environment. Often tossed away after their initial use, plastic bags can be found drifting through the local park, tumbling along the beach and, literally, forming islands in some oceans. It takes hundreds of years for a plastic bag to biodegrade. Paper bags present their own environmental danger beginning, of course, with the number of trees it takes to produce them and ending at landfills in which they are the largest contributor.
Ecofriendly bags are designed not just for use but for re-use and can be found in a number of materials that, when finally put to rest, go ever so gently. There are a number of commercially produced cloth tote bags. These are sold to both individuals and to businesses that find them to be popular giveaways on which they can emblazon an advertising logo while proving themselves to be keepers of the green theme.
And, “eco-friendly” can also be stylish. There are different colors that might match either an outfit or a mood, and to make certain you get just what you want, there are patterns available to make your own. They can even be color coded while grocery shopping: Meat to the red tote; vegetables to the green, and miscellaneous in the white one. (To be safe, don’t forget to occasionally wash and dry those grocery totes.)
“Re-use” and “recycle” are the keywords for an environmentally safer world and while both plastic and paper can be they all too often are not. That’s why acquiring the habit of using your very own reusable bag can be so important. You can also be proud of the fact that you’re doing your part to make it a better world.
